What is a duomo?

The word, where it comes from, and the one in Milan.

  • Latin domus, house
  • Duomo = main church
  • Maria Nascente

In short

  • A duomo is the main church of an Italian city, and it is generally also the cathedral.
  • The word comes from the Latin domus, 'house', with 'of God' understood.
  • In English, Milan's Duomo is called Milan Cathedral; its title is Maria Nascente, Mary at her birth.
  • Duomo does not mean dome: the Italian word for a dome is cupola.

A duomo is a city's main church

Treccani, the standard Italian dictionary, defines it that way and adds that it is generally the cathedral as well. The root is the Latin domus, 'house', with Dei ('of God') or ecclesiae ('of the church') understood. So when an Italian says "il duomo", the literal sense is "the House".

Duomo or cathedral?

The two overlap but measure different things. A cathedral holds a bishop's seat. A duomo is a town's main church. Most of the time one building is both, as in Milan, the seat of an archbishop. It does not have to be: Monza, just north of Milan, has a Duomo that is not a cathedral.

For a traveller, this means that many Italian towns have a Duomo, and locals rarely add the town's name. In Milan "the Duomo" is enough: the square and the metro station carry the same name.

Duomo and dome are different things

This causes real confusion, mostly because of Florence, where the Duomo is famous for its dome. In Italian, a dome is a cupola. Milan's dome is enclosed by the tiburium, so what you see from the ground is a mass of spires, with the Madonnina on the tallest.

What the Duomo in Milan is

It is the Catholic cathedral of Milan, a Gothic building in Candoglia marble, begun around 1386 and finished in stages over nearly six centuries. It is dedicated to the Nativity of Mary and bears the title Maria Nascente, and the façade reads Mariae Nascenti. The Italian Church's register lists it as the Chiesa di Santa Maria Nascente. You will also see other long formal titles online; the ones we could not confirm on an official page, we leave out.

It is run by the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, the body founded in 1387 to build it. This site is an independent guide and not part of it.

What you can actually do there

Five things, stacked from top to bottom: look up at the 108.5-metre Main Spire, walk the terraces at 31 and 45 metres, see the interior, go underground to the Archaeological Area, and visit the Museum on the square. For the cathedral and the roof together, the next question is which ticket covers both.

Frequently asked questions

What does duomo mean in English?
Usually cathedral. Strictly it means a city's main church, from the Latin domus, 'house', understood as the house of God or of the church.
What is the name of the cathedral in Milan?
Everyone calls it the Duomo di Milano, or Milan Cathedral in English. It is dedicated to the Nativity of Mary and bears the title Maria Nascente.
Is a duomo the same as a cathedral?
Not always. A cathedral is a bishop's church, while a duomo is a town's principal church, so the two usually coincide but need not.
Does a duomo have to have a dome?
No. The name refers to the church's rank, not its shape. Milan's Duomo is known for its spires, and its dome is enclosed by the tiburium.
