Planning around Wednesdays
On Wednesdays only the Duomo ticket is sold, so no Museum entry comes with it. The Museum has three extraordinary Wednesday openings, 10:00–19:00: 23 December 2026, 30 December 2026 and 6 January 2027. If Wednesday is your only day, do the cathedral and rooftop and leave the Museum out.
On free last Sundays the shop sells a Duomo-only ticket for the cathedral, and you book your free Museum place separately. Booking opens on the Tuesday before.
What to see
The route is one-way and opens with the Treasure, owned by the Metropolitan Chapter. From there it runs through statues, stained glass, paintings, tapestries, architectural models, terracottas and plaster casts.
Three stops to save time for:
- Sala della Madonnina. Giuseppe Perego's terracotta models, the walnut head and the original iron core of the statue that stands on the main spire. This is as close as you will get to her.
- The early sculpture. San Giorgio by Giorgio Solari, dated 1403, and the Padre eterno by Beltramino de Zutti.
- Dittico delle cinque parti, one of the highlights the Museum lists by name.
The present layout, by Guido Canali, dates from the 2013 reopening. The Museum first opened in 1953.
San Gottardo in Corte
Built in 1336 as the Palatine Chapel of Azzone Visconti, it holds his funerary monument, an altarpiece by Cerano and a Crucifixion fresco from the school of Giotto. Its bell tower carried the city's first public clock. It follows Museum hours and is closed on the same days.
Practical details
Ticket Office 2 is inside the Museum, which is also the step-free way to reach a ticket desk, except on Wednesdays. The ground floor covers about 2,000 sq m on a circular path with ramps up to 9%. The passage to San Gottardo has steps, but there is step-free access from outside on via Pecorari. The Museum has toilets and a Baby Pit-stop, useful because the rooftop and the cathedral have no toilets.
Check the calendar of changes before you go, especially around Christmas and New Year.
