Getting to the Duomo
Organised by where you start: station, airport, hotel or car.
- Metro M1 and M3
- Trams at the door
- Area C for cars
In short
- The Duomo stands on Piazza del Duomo, 20122 Milano, right above Duomo metro station on lines M1 and M3.
- From Milano Centrale, take the M3 (yellow line) direction San Donato to Duomo, with no change.
- From Malpensa, the Malpensa Express to Cadorna plus one metro line (M1) is the simplest route; from Linate, take the M4 and change to the M1 at San Babila.
- A contactless card or phone works on ATM metro lines; use the same one to tap out.

Already in central Milan
Take the M1 (red) or M3 (yellow) to Duomo; the exit puts you straight on the square. Trams 2, 3, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 19 stop at Duomo M1 M3 as well. If the Duomo station is packed, the neighbouring stops are Cordusio on the M1 and Missori on the M3. M1, M2 and M3 run from about 5:30 to about 00:30.
Once you are out, the piazza page shows where the ticket offices are. Your entrance is printed on your ticket, and the visitor guide covers the rest.
From a railway station
Milano Centrale. The station is on the M2 and M3. Take the M3 direction San Donato and get off at Duomo with no change. It is the easy route, including with bags. On the map it is four stops: Repubblica, Turati, Montenapoleone, Duomo.
Cadorna. Cadorna FN is on the M1 and M2. Take the M1 through Cairoli and Cordusio to Duomo, three stops on the same line.
From an airport
| Airport | Distance | Best route to the Duomo |
|---|---|---|
| Malpensa (MXP) | 45 km | Malpensa Express to Cadorna, then M1 |
| Linate (LIN) | 7 km | M4 to San Babila, then M1 one stop |
| Bergamo (BGY) | 50 km | Bus shuttle to Milano Centrale, then M3 |
Malpensa. Trains to Cadorna leave every 30 minutes and take about 37 minutes from Terminal 1 and 43 from Terminal 2. Trains to Milano Centrale take about 51 minutes from Terminal 1, also every 30 minutes. For the cathedral, Cadorna is the better choice: the train ride is shorter and the M1 goes straight there. A single is €15 to any Milan station (€7.50 ages 4–13, under-4s free with a paying parent), and a return within 30 days is €25 online. Contactless tapping does not work on these trains. Buses also run to Milano Centrale from four operators, using the stop in via Sammartini.
Linate. The M4 (blue line) runs daily from 5:40 to 00:30, and the NM4 night bus replaces it overnight. The airport says the centre is 12 minutes away, without defining the centre. Change to the M1 at San Babila, one stop from Duomo.
Bergamo. The airport lists no direct train. Four companies run shuttles to Milano Centrale: Autostradale, Flibco, Orioshuttle and Terravision. Fares change, so check before you book. The alternative is the ATB bus to Bergamo station, about 10 minutes, then a train to Milan.
From a hotel in Milan
Walk if you can. The hotels page lists properties that state their distance from the cathedral.
By car
Do not, unless you have a reason. Area C charges cars entering the centre from Monday to Friday, 07:30–19:30, and the day ticket is €7.50. An affiliated garage brings Area C entry down to €4.50 if you park for over an hour, with parking capped at €4 an hour. Rinascente names a car park at Via Agnello 13 for its Piazza Duomo store. None of ATM's park-and-ride car parks is at Duomo.
Paying for the metro
- Single ticket: €2.20, valid 90 minutes from first validation, including re-entering the metro. Valid end to end on M1, M3, M4 and M5.
- Contactless: tap a credit card, debit card, phone or watch at the gate, with no commission. In the metro, tap the same card to exit. From the fourth trip, the daily rate applies. This covers ATM lines only, not S-lines or trains.
- RicaricaMi: ATM's rechargeable ticket, sold at metro machines, kiosks and resellers but not at ATM Points. Hold it to the reader; do not insert it. ATM's ticket pages no longer describe the old paper ticket.
- Day ticket: €7.60 for 24 hours. 3-day ticket: €15.50.
- 10-ticket carnet: €19.50, not usable by several people at once.
- Under-14s travel free with an identity document.
The ATM Point inside Duomo station is open Monday to Saturday 7:45–20:00, and Sunday 10:15–13:15 and 14:00–17:30. If you plan several museums, see Milan passes before buying transport separately, as the official City Pass includes it. Hours for the Duomo itself are worth a look before you set off.
