The Duomo rooftop at sunset

In short

  • Regular rooftop hours end at 19:00, with last entry at 18:00, so a sunset up there depends on the time of year.
  • Later openings happen only in set periods; the 2026 ones ended on 13 September, and no winter programme was published at our last check.
  • Around the shortest days the sun goes down within regular hours; in summer it sets after regular closing, so you would need an evening opening.
  • For a night view without the rooftop, use the square or a terrace nearby: more viewpoints.

When the rooftop stays open later

Later openings of the Duomo rooftop are announced for set periods, not as a permanent service. In 2026 there were two:

  • Spring holidays and summer weekends. Later closing on named holidays, then on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 5 June to 13 September 2026.
  • Serate d'Incanto. Thursday evenings from 11 June to 10 September 2026, by lift, from €20 (reduced €10).

Both have finished. Future editions are not confirmed, so a page promising a sunset slot needs a dated official notice behind it.

Catching the light on regular hours

Look up the sunset time for your date and compare it with the 18:00 last entry. When the two are close, book the latest slot that still leaves you room. The time on a terrace ticket refers to the terrace entrance, and arriving outside it is at staff discretion.

Three things can spoil the plan. Celebrations sometimes stop entry early, and the stairs stop with them on some dates, so read the notices. Terrace visits can be suspended in bad weather. And the second level takes extra climbing, so allow for it if you want the highest view.

The Duomo in the evening, without a rooftop ticket

The square needs no ticket. After the cathedral closes, Terrazza Aperol runs to 23:00 (Saturdays 01:00) and the Giacomo Arengario restaurant to 24:00, both looking onto the Duomo. On Thursdays the Museo del Novecento stays open to 22:30, with last entry an hour earlier, and the Sala Fontana windows face the cathedral. Views of the Duomo compares them all.

Evening music in the cathedral

The Duomo's Scintille di Musica concerts are free with a mandatory reservation, with access from 18:45. One listed date is Night of Light on Wednesday 9 December 2026, with booking from 2 December at 16:00: a way to be inside after visiting hours.

Frequently asked questions

Can you watch the sunset from the Duomo rooftop?
Yes, when sunset falls within opening hours or during an evening opening. Don't book on the assumption that one is running: check the calendar of changes for your date.
Is the Duomo rooftop open at night?
Not as a regular service. Night openings have been limited to set programmes, such as the Thursdays of summer 2026, which have finished.
What if it is cloudy on my sunset slot?
Official tickets are non-refundable, and a grey sky is not grounds for a refund. Where a partner ticket row shows free cancellation, you can watch the forecast before deciding.
