Duomo dress code
Shoulders and legs covered, comfortable shoes for the rooftop, no large bags.
- Cover shoulders and legs
- No hats inside
- Cover-ups at ticket offices
In short
- Inside the cathedral, sleeveless or low-cut clothing, shorts, miniskirts and hats are not permitted.
- Ticket pages sum this up as covering shoulders and legs, with no distinction between men and women.
- Disposable cloaks are sold at the ticket offices, and the official flyer shows €3 beside them.
- On the rooftop, comfortable shoes are required, heels are not advised and metal soles are forbidden.

What to wear
| Part of the visit | Not permitted or advised | Fine |
|---|---|---|
| Cathedral | Sleeveless or low-cut tops, shorts, miniskirts, hats | Covered shoulders and legs |
| Rooftop | Metal soles forbidden; heels not advised | Comfortable shoes, which are required |
The written rule covers the cathedral itself. Ticket pages tell all visitors to cover shoulders and legs, so dress the same even on a rooftop-only ticket. It's easier than arguing the point at the door.
In summer, the easy answer is a light scarf or overshirt in your bag. Cloaks from the ticket offices are the fallback.
An official ticket is non-refundable, so being turned away for your clothes costs you the visit.
Bags and things to leave behind
Besides luggage and large rucksacks, the regulations ban:
- glass and ceramic objects, drones and their remote controls
- helmets of any kind, even carried by hand, so bike and scooter riders need a plan
- knives and cutting tools; small scissors, nail files, umbrellas and selfie sticks are exempted
- flowers and plants of any kind
- food and drink, except water and medication
- bicycles, scooters and skates, including electric ones
- animals, except guide dogs
Hair clips and hair pins are on the banned list too, an unusual line that we report as published. Formal attire, masks and disguises are also not allowed, apart from ceremonies held in the cathedral, and neither are political signs or symbols.
Expect a security check: you will be asked to empty your pockets of metal objects and open your bags.
If you have luggage
We found no official cloakroom, so don't arrive straight from the station with a suitcase. The visitor guide has the storage options.
