Piazza del Duomo
Who is who around Milan's main square, and what to do there.
- Free to enter
- Metro M1 and M3
- Ticket office at 14/A
In short
- Piazza del Duomo is Milan's main square, with the cathedral at one end, above Duomo metro station on lines M1 and M3.
- Facing the façade, you have the Galleria on your left and Palazzo Reale on your right.
- The ticket offices are at Piazza Duomo 14/A and in the Museum at Piazza del Duomo 12.
- The best free views of the cathedral are from the square itself; the Museo del Novecento adds a ticketed one through its windows.

How the square is laid out
Stand in the square and face the cathedral. The Galleria's arch is on your left and Palazzo Reale on your right, with the Arengario, home to the Museo del Novecento, next to it. Rinascente is beside the Galleria on the north side.
| Address | What is there | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Piazza Duomo 14/A | Ticket Office 1, Sala delle Colonne | Buying tickets (three steps at the entrance) |
| Piazza del Duomo 12 | Palazzo Reale; Duomo Museum and Ticket Office 2 | Exhibitions, the Museum, step-free ticket access |
| Piazza Duomo 8 | Museo del Novecento, in the Arengario | 20th-century art, windows on the Duomo |
| North side | Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II | Free walk to La Scala |
| Piazza del Duomo / Via Santa Radegonda 10 | Rinascente | Floor 7 food hall with a view of the spires |
The Duomo Info Point is at the right-hand corner of the façade, on the Palazzo Reale side, open daily 9:30–17:30. The Group Ticket Office is in the fenced area on the south side of the cathedral.
In the middle: the monument
The rider at the centre is Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of Italy, the same king who gave his name to the Galleria. The monument is usually credited to Ercole Rosa. We could not check the details against a city source, so we stop there.
Palazzo Reale
The former royal palace at number 12 runs the city's large temporary shows. It is open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–19:30, to 22:30 on Thursdays, and closed on Mondays, with last entry an hour before closing. Tickets depend on the exhibition, and a typical full ticket is €15. Booking is not compulsory, but entry without one is not guaranteed on weekends and holidays, so book those days. Shows listed at our last check include I Brueghel, to 31 January 2027.
The Duomo Museum is inside the same palace and has its own ticket and hours, with Wednesdays off. The two are easy to confuse, so check which door you need.
Museo del Novecento
This is the choice if you want art and a view on one ticket. The museum opened on 6 December 2010 in the Palazzo dell'Arengario and shows over 300 works of Italian art from the 20th and 21st centuries. A spiral ramp climbs from metro level, and the Sala Fontana has floor-to-ceiling windows onto the Duomo and the square.
- Hours: Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–19:30, Thursday to 22:30, closed Mondays and on 25 December, 1 January and 1 May. Last entry an hour before closing.
- Tickets: €10 full, €5 reduced; open-date €11 and €6.
- Free: for everyone on the first Sunday of the month, and for under-26s on the second Tuesday.
The Giacomo Arengario restaurant is on the third floor, open daily 12:00–24:00, reached by the ramp or its own lift from the museum entrance, with a terrace looking onto the Duomo.
Rinascente and Il Mercato del Duomo
Rinascente has ten floors and entrances on the square and at Via Santa Radegonda 10. Floor 7 holds the Food Market and the Food Hall restaurants, and its terrace faces the spires. We could not confirm the store's opening hours, so check before planning around them.
Il Mercato del Duomo has Terrazza Aperol on its second floor, open daily 11:00–23:00, and to 01:00 on Saturdays, with a balcony facing the cathedral. Both are places to sit down and look; the views page compares them with the ticketed ones.
What the square is like through the year
From 1 December 2026 to 6 January 2027 the square fills with the wooden huts of the Christmas market, and the city's tree stands here too. See Christmas at the Duomo for the closures around it.
The square has no ticket and no opening hours of its own, which makes it the fallback for a closed day. On a Monday, when Palazzo Reale, the Novecento and Highline are shut, the cathedral and terraces are still open. On a Wednesday, the Museum is the one that closes.
On the square with a ticket
Go to the entrance printed on your ticket for security checks, not the nearest queue. Bags are opened and pockets emptied of metal objects. The rules, including what you cannot bring in, are on the visitor guide. If you arrive by metro, the exit brings you out on the square, as the getting-there page explains.
